One of the aspects of the modern Dodge Challenger that helps it stand apart from the competitors is the variety of different hood designs offered across the trim lines from year to year. Today, we look at each of them and ask you to pick which one you think looks the best on the modern Dodge Challenger.
2015 Dodge Challenger Introduction
When the current generation of the Challenger was introduced for the 2015 model year, it was offered with three different hood designs. The SXT, R/T and Scat Pack came with a basic “power bulge” style hood with a raised center section flanked by a pair of vents – similar to what was offered on the 2006 Challenger Concept.
The 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T and Scat Pack models could both be fitted with the Shaker package, which focused on the classic exposed-engine design. Shaker models have a scoop that sits atop the engine, with a hood in the center of the hood allowing that scoop to extend up into the open air, moving with the engine – hence the name. It shakes at idle and moves when you climb into the throttle.
Next, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT 392 came with a hood that had a raised center section with a front-facing hood scoop at the leading edge.
Finally, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat had a similarly shaped hood to the SRT 392, with a raised center section and an integrated front-facing scoop that feeds air into the engine bay, but the supercharged models had large heat extraction vents flanking the hood scoop.
These were the four hood designs for the Dodge Challenger for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 model years.
2018 to 2022 Dodge Challenger
In 2018, the one-year Challenger SRT Demon was introduced with a unique hood that had a massive scoop that fed the 840-horsepower Hemi.
For the 2019 model year, the SRT 392 was discontinued and with it, the unvented SRT hood with the front-facing scoop was gone from the lineup as well. Also for 2019, the 2015-2018 Hellcat hood with the front-facing scoop and the heat extractors became the standard design on Scat Pack models while the unvented SRT 392 hood was offered on GT and R/T models.
This move was made because the 2019 Hellcat Challenger was the first to showcase the latest hood design, with a pair of front-facing scoops that send air directly to the engine air intake system of the then-new Redeye.
