STLA had a good quarter, promises new 2023-2024 vehicles

Jeep and Stellantis leaders: Carlos Tavares, Christian Meunier, Jim Morrison

The first quarter of 2023 was good for Stellantis, but not great; while net revenues were up 14% over Q1 2022, with a 7% increase in sales and high net prices, market share fell in North America and Europe. This was somewhat offset by small gains in South America and Africa/Middle East. Globally, low-emissions vehicles sales rose by 25%, driven by the Jeep 4xe series. BEVs were up by 22% year-over-year.

STLA: big profits, profit-sharing (updated)

Stellantis financials - earnings - dollars

Thanks to high profits in the United States, around 40,500 union employees in the country will get profit-sharing checks averaging $14,760. It’s a mild increase form last year, and comes as car prices have shot up due to supply-chain constraints.

Stellantis is a new company, still, but the results still set a record with a roughly $18-billion net profit; adjusted margin hit 13%. What’s more, Stellantis became a bigger BEV player with a 41% year-over-year growth, key to fighting Tesla (whose European sales shot up by a factor of ten, but remain small) and Volkswagen. Battery-electric car sales are rising fast in Europe, where fuel is far more expensive.

A better 2022 for Mopars, north of the border

Jeep Wagoneer

Mopars fared reasonably well in Canadian sales for 2022, with 169,179 cars sold—a 5% gain over 2021.

The Wagoneer had a good outing with 1631 regular and 930 high-priced Grands trading hands—totaling 16,682 sales. Compare those premium cars from a standard brand to Alfa Romeo’s 911 total sales for the year. Both were up from 2021 but that makes sense, since they started production late in that year.

Mopar US sales fell in 2022 (updated) while GM gained

Chrysler 2022 sales

All FCA US brands were down in U.S. sales for 2022, mainly due to supply shortages.

At Jeep, the Wagoneer was a hero with 316,219 sales in its first full year, with Grand Wagoneer adding 11,736 more—and showing that you can indeed sell an expensive Jeep (other than Wranglers). The low-end Renegade, by contrast, only had 27m549 sales. The mainstream Cherokee only mustered 40,322 sales, less than the two pricey Wagoneers; it leaves production on the last day of February. The Grand Cherokee hit 223,345 despite being down 16%; Wrangler dropped 11% to 181,409; and Gladiator hit 77,855 down 13%, despite its high price and niche status.
