A Kentucky Derby Horse for Mopar Lovers

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I love all types of horsepower – both mechanical and natural. I am a horse owner and rider, as well as being a big horse racing fan. While not everyone pays attention to thoroughbred horse racing, the Kentucky Derby is one of those American sporting events that tends to draw people who generally aren’t fans. Derby parties are fun whether you are a casual fan, a serious fan or not a fan at all, but if you don’t have a horse in the race, it can be hard to get into the action.

There are no horses running in the 2021 Kentucky Derby with direct ties to the Mopar world, but there is a horse with a Mopar-like name. That is the horse Super Stock, starting in the 18 spot for the big race. The horse doesn’t have Mopar ties, but with the Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock being the most powerful American production car ever with 807 horsepower, a connection can be made for those who look for a name that jumps out at them.

Is this a reach? Sure, but the Challenger Super Stock is a current and historically significant Mopar muscle car and Super Stock the horse is one of the 19 entries in the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby. It should be noted that there were originally 20 horses, but as of the time of publication, there are only 19 horses running, as King Fury scratched from the race.

Super Stock Details

The horse Super Stock will start in the 18 spot for the Kentucky Derby, meaning that it will wear the number 18 on its saddle cloth during the race. Super Stock is trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by Keith Asmussen and Erv Woolsey. Woolsey’s day job is serving as the manager for George Strait and other country music superstars, but with Super Stock, he has his first Derby horse. As for Asmussen, he has entered 21 horses in the Kentuck Derby in his storied career, but he has yet to win one, giving him the unpleasant distinction of being the trainer with the most Kentucky Derby starts without a win. An optimist may say that Asmussen is due for a win and Super Stock could be the horse to give him that win.

Super Stock Win

It will not be easy though, as the morning line for Super Stock is 30 to 1, making him one of the longer shots on the board. Super Stock won the Arkansas Derby to get to the Kentucky Derby, which was one of the bigger wins of jockey Ricardo Santana Jr’s career. Santana has not won the Kentucky Derby, but he has won many major stakes races, as well as several Breeders’ Cup Championship races.
