Big Mopar sedans running out of competitors

US dealers will be clear of one more large sedan in 2023, according to Larry Vellequette of Automotive News, who reported this week that the Toyota Avalon is being dropped at the end of the 2022 model year. Originally created out of the Camry by mainly ex-GM engineers in the United States, the Avalon waxed and waned in popularity over the years; a brand new version was created for the 2019 model year, sharing as always with the Camry. It had a 301-horsepower 3.5 liter V6 engine coupled to an eight-speed automatic, with an optional 2.5 liter hybrid producing 215 horsepower (including electric) and 163 lb-ft of torque, good for over 40 mpg.

Toyota has sold very few Avalons in the first half of 2021—only 10,328 in the US, vs 177,671 Camrys. The Highlander CUV, which has roughly the same footprint, outsold the Avalon by 14:1, while the Charger outsold it four-to-one.

This leaves the Charger and 300 with just the Nissan Maxima as direct competition in the mainstream-large-sedan market. The Maxima is not a best seller, by any means: Nissan only sold 9,965 of them in the first half of 2021, and sales had dropped by just 1% from the first half of 2020. By comparison, Americans bought 42,103 Chargers and 11,062 300s.

  1. It’s sad to me that FCA, now Stellantis, marketing still cant see what a refreshed current 300 for 2022 and 2023 could do for sales! the 300 is not killing itself! they are deliberately killing this car! first FCA now-Stellantis! As I’ve and thousands of others have said they Stellantis could rule the USA In Large American style sedan sales! as the last players in the game just like they rule the Minivan market! 300 fans, and clubs, all over the USA are begging for a refresh!

IT DONT TAKE a fortune to update a grille, headlights, and tail lights, and a quick interior upgrade-(say like what they did for the Durango for 2021) They are on track to sell 30k 300’s this year of 2021 UP FROM LAST YEAR NOT DOWN! and don’t tell me they don’t make more profit $ on a 300 than a Jeep Cherokee, Compass, Wrangler or Renegade, which start at 25K to 29K+ Hell a Grand Cherokee starts at about 35K and the 300 starts at 31K+ to 42K+ so per vehicle it brings them more profit! than most of the Jeeps from the same USA UAW represented Plants! and Canadian UNIFOR represented plants. Isn’t that what the late Sergio said drives the company more than sales figures! profit per vehicle!

I asked Ralph Gilles about the updated 300 that was cancelled at a cars, and coffee, for FCA event and he rolled his Eyes and said It was A beauty! and was a disappointing decision! to the styling staff! and that’s all he could say on it! as he signed my Viper under hood at the show-FACT!

The 300 outsells the entire Alfa lineup and Fiat combined! the 300 will out sell both Caddy cars combined also. and as far as the future if your making a electric Charger and Challenger! why not a 300 on that same Production line??? after all I see plenty of Electric sedans from mainstream to full luxury! being planned by other Companies! and a Bunch are already out! the 300 should be A Premium sedan priced at thousands under A Caddy! but giving You just as much! Like the 300C did! until they dropped it in the USA but Continue selling it in Mexico? which is a bunch of BS!

The Chrysler brand despite people (uneducated on the brand) has always been a premium Brand with a few missteps knocking that image! like the PT cruiser (which was a Plymouth!) that was a stupid decision by Daimler-Benz! it hurt the premium image!!!! (aka-like Buick’s) I remember the LHS, New Yorker, and Concorde, all being made at the same time with the upscale LHS AT THE TOP! Chrysler had Guts to compete in the upscale market then! and sold in the 200K range + with those sedans! Brand! they Chrysler at the time had the best damn looking sedans in America! the along comes the con job by Daimler-Benz! and Eaton as the stuge that started the Killing of the Pentastar! for good! go to car #3// Eaton! and yes I know sedans are not what they were but their are thousands of customers still all over! it that was not so Electric sedans by everyone but the Chrysler brand would not be planned!!!!!!!!!
