Cherokee plant drops another 400 jobs

In another sign that the semiconductor shortage isn’t ending any time soon, partly due to damaged fabrication plants in Texas and Asia, Stellantis is cutting 400 more jobs at the Belvidere plant in Illinois, starting January 14.

The company will try to provide jobs for the laid off workers as they become available in other plants, but Belvidere is a good distance from the next assembly plant in Indiana, Ohio, or Michigan.

1,641 workers were dropped in July with a full shift abandoned; 2,362 are currently employed there. The Belvidere City Council appears to be trying to get Stellantis to convert the plant, long-term, to making electric vehicles; the state is also encouraging the placement of EV plants.
