Meet the All-New 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This morning, Jeep introduced the all-new Grand Cherokee. As you might imagine, it looks a great deal like the Grand Cherokee L that debuted earlier this year, except this Jeep only has two rows of seats. However, there is one key difference between the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, and that is the 4xe plug-in hybrid package, which is even available on the Trailhawk models.

There is a ton of information to unpack, as the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is all-new inside and out, and over the next week we will take a closer look at the details of the new SUV. Today, we bring you a look at the key components and aspects of the 2022 Grand Cherokee , along with some pictures of the SUV – although you might have a hard time telling the difference between the two at a glance.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trimlines

When the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee goes on sale during the fourth quarter of 2021, it will be available in five basic trim levels – Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk (below in red), Overland and Summit. The standard engine in every trim level is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque while the Trailhawk, Overland and Summit can also be fitted with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models. Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit all come with standard rear-wheel-drive while four-wheel-drive is standard on the Trailhawk. The properly equipped 2022 Grand Cherokee with the Hemi can tow up to 7,200 pounds.

In four-wheel-drive models, the Quadra-Trac I full-time single-speed is standard on Laredo and Limited models, Quadra-Trac II active 4WD with a two-speed transfer case is standard on the Overland and both the Trailhawk and Summit (Summit Reserve shown below in white) models get the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system with an electronic limited-slip differential in the rear axle.

In addition to the models mentioned above, the 2022 Grand Cherokee also gets the 4xe treatment , which is a plug-in hybrid system featuring the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor which work together to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel-drive and the 8-speed automatic transmission are standard on all 4xe models, which include the Limited, Overland, Summit and Trailhawk. This system is expected to offer 25 miles of all-electric driving range and an overall fuel economy rating of 57 MPGe.

We will go into more detail on the drivetrains and trim levels later this week.

2022 Trailhawk and Trailhawk 4xe

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is the most off-road-ready trim level, coming standard with all-terrain tires, an integrated off-road camera, the Quadra-Drive II active transfer case with rear eLSD and Selec-Terrain and the Quadra-Lift air suspension system with up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance as well as improved approach, departure and breakover angles. Other key components off this off-road package are a class-exclusive disconnecting sway bar, high strength steel skid plates, red tow hooks, 18-inch wheels and specific exterior badging.

The Trailhawk 4xe comes with similar functional features, but in addition to the hybrid drivetrain, it has blue tow hooks, blue accents on the wheels and some unique off-road measurements due to the battery location. The Trailhawk 4xe can safely ford 24 inches of water thanks to 10.9 inches of ground clearance.

Premium Interior Amenities

Finally, in addition to the new exterior, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has an all-new interior that is more spacious and more luxorious. When all loaded up, this new two-row Grand Cherokee has a 10.1-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10-inch head-up display, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen running UConnect 5 and a segment-first passenger’s side screen, measuring 10.26 inches. Of course, like the “L”, this Grand Cherokee can be outfitted with the McIntosh 19-speaker sound system.

As you might imagine, all of that premium infotainment technology is met by loads of premium materials, including plush Palermo leather on the 16-way adjustable power, massaging front seats. You can get heated and ventilated seats front and rear, a heated steering wheel and more. For example, those buyers who opt for the premium Summit Reserve (shown above) package will get Palermo leather seats, a leather-wrapped armrest and door trim, open-pore Waxed Walnut wood trim, suede pillars and headliner, ventilated front and rear seats, memory and massage front seats, the front passenger interactive display with 10.25-in. touchscreen, the premium 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, 21-inch wheels and Summit Reserve badging (below).

We will go into much more detail on interior trim later this week.

We don’t have any pricing information on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee yet, but with it being so similar to the larger Grand Cherokee L, we would expect it to have a slightly lower price across the lineup. The L starts at $38,635 for the rear-drive Laredo and $40,635 for the four-wheel-drive version, so the odds are good that the four-wheel-drive 2022 Grand Cherokee two-row will start under $40,000.
