Old-series minivan fires: no cause found, no recall needed

RS Grand Caravan minivan

The NHTSA’s probe of minivan fires in the “RT” series Town & Country and Grand Caravan has ended after nearly two years with no recommended actions. The investigation covered 170,000 minivans from 2013 to 2020 which had a charge port between the middle and back seats, based on three reported fires. Neither NHTSA nor Chrysler could find evidence for a problem or a common cause. It is possible the fires were caused by faulty devices plugged into the ports. Given that the fires only affected 0.002% of the vans in that group (and a smaller fraction of the total “RT” minivans made in the 2013-20 model years), the likelihood of problems is not high.
