Rams, Dodges recalled for faulty ESC light

Incorrectly written software in the antilock brake control module in 370,437 Ram 2500s and Dodge Durangos can result in the ESC light failing to come on when the electronic stability control (ESC) does. This can increase the odds of a crash, as drivers will be less aware that they are approaching the vehicle’s road-adhesion limits.

The recall affects:

  • 349,848 2019-22 Ram 2500s made from October 11, 2018 to March 5, 2022;
  • 20,176 2021-22 Dodge Durangos made from July 13, 2020 to March 4, 2022; and
  • 413 Ram 3500 Chassis Cabs with gross weight ratings of under 10,000 pounds, made from November 29, 2018 to March 2, 2022.

The numbers also show that the low-capacity Ram 3500 chassis cab is not the company’s best seller. Durangos have been someone capacity constrained, but this number is still fairly low.

The sales numbers do not include recalls outside the United States, but longstanding Dodge/Ram policy suggests that these will be recalled as well.

The fix is replacing the antilock brake system control module; there are 12 different part numbers this applies to. All were made by ZF. Dealers and owners are to be notified in April-May.
