Stellantis Announces 10th Drive for Design Contest

The Stellantis Product Design Office is celebrating 10 years of their innovative Drive for Design Contest, which gives high school students who are interested in vehicle design a chance to spend time with the head designers from the automaker. The modern version of this contest was started ten years ago by company design mastermind Mark Trostle, who won a similar contest when he was in high school. Having experienced the benefit of such a program first hand, he revived the contest and it has proven to be popular with students around the country.

“Winning is not the main goal of this contest, it’s about discovering career opportunities, helping young artists hone their craft and educating parents of young artists about a rewarding profession where they can use their artistic talent,” said Mark Trostle, Head of Ram Truck and Mopar Design . “Regardless of where these students ultimately land after graduation, it’s been rewarding to our team to be able to make a positive impact on someone’s life and career.”

The focus for 2022 is to design a future Chrysler brand product, similar to the Airflow Concept shown here. The images showing this sleek machine are intended to provide the students with inspiration and direction for their sketches.

The contest is open to high school students in the United States in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Design entries need to be turned in by May 13th 2022 and as has been the case in past years, there will be 3 grand prize winners. Those 3 students will participate in a virtual day of design with members of the Stellantis, Wacom and Apple teams, as well as a scholarship to attend a four-week summer program at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

However, for the 10th anniversary of the Drive for Design Contest, each of the students in the top 10 will participate in a virtual networking session with Trostle and other members of the Stellantis design team. That should give even more students a reason to participate, as the odds of working virtually with members of the Stellantis design team are considerably better this year.
