Overall, Dodge was the mass-market brand with the best performance, execution, and layout, according to the 2023 J.D. Power APEAL™ study. With a score of 887, Dodge equaled the top premium brand, Jaguar, and easily bested Mercedes (867)—and Alfa Romeo (859).
Ram came in at #2 in the mass-market brands with a score of 873, higher than Cadillac, Lexus, Volvo, Polestar, and Audi.
The average for premium brands was 871; for mass-market brands, it was 837.
Ironically, Chrysler landed at the very bottom of the mass-market brands, with a score of 810. One of the most reputable brands in the world, Toyota, came in just above Chrysler at 824. Jeep landed at 831, just below the average, and just below Honda. On the lighter side, 2023 was Dodge’s fourth consecutive year as the top rated mass market brand; and Ram did well overall.
By segment, Hyundai and Kia dominated, wit wins in small car (Rio), midsize car (K5), midsize premium (Stinger), and compact car (Forte); for small premium SUV and upper midsize SUV (GV60 and Telluride); and compact SUV (EV6). The Carnival won minivan and the Santa Cruz won midsize pickup. No other manufacture came close to that many wins.
The only Stellantis vehicle to win any class was the Dodge Challenger, the only car above average in the Midsize Sporty Car class. Jeep did not manage a single top three place. Chrysler did not show up anywhere in the list, and Ram’s only “win” was second place in Large Light Duty Pickup (commercial vans and heavy duty pickups were not included).
In fairness, few companies managed more than one or two wins; the only exceptions were Hyundai, BMW (five wins), and Toyota (three wins). Mercedes, GM, and Jaguar Land Rover all had a single win—despite Jaguar’s top rank in the premium list.
