The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released its list of 2022 recalls. Overall, there were 390 recalls, including trucks and trailers. Ford topped the list by a huge margin, with 65 recalls, including the company’s trademark fire-hazard recalls. In fairness, Ford had four major launches—the Bronco, Bronco Sport and Escape, and Mustang and F-150 BEVs. 8.6 million vehicles were covered.
Next up, oddly, given its relatively small sales in the US (and even smaller range of vehicle types and platforms), came Volkswagen, which includes Porsche and Audi—with 45 recalls covering just 1 million vehicles.
Daimler Trucks North America, which includes several different brands and a variety of market segments, the biggest seller likely being Freightliner, had 42 recalls for just 273,311 trucks.
Stellantis, which includes the former Chrysler brands as well as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Maserati—a bewildering array of market segments, platforms, and powertrains—had 38 recalls for 3 million vehicles. Oddly, the next company in the list was Forest River, which makes RVs and commercial vehicles, with 35 recalls (203,694 vehicles).
General Motors, which ranges from Chevy Bolt compacts to medium duty trucks, had 30 recalls covering 3.3 million vehicles. GM is the largest of the domestic companies by sales, coming in ahead of Ford and well ahead of Stellantis.
The rest of the list was:
- Mercedes: 29 recalls
- Kia: 24 recalls (Kia and Hyundai should likely be combined but they have different American companies, so they are kept separate)
- Navistar: 22
- Hyundai: 21
- Tesla, which only has four models: 20, covering 3.8 million vehicles—that’s more than Stellantis
- BMW: 19
Toyota, though extremely popular in the US and having a fairly diverse group of vehicles, managed to stay out of the Recall Top Ten.
