Late last month, MSN and others reported that Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares sees a $25,000 electric Jeep coming to the United States “very soon.”
The cheapest Jeep in the United States is selling for around $29,445 with no options and in white only, including destination charges. The new Jeep would cost $26,595 with current destination charges; and buyers wanting to choose a color beyond a single default would likely have to pay another $500-$600. Even with these conditions, the price would be low for any Jeep, much less a battery-electric model. Indeed, the average car sold in the United States in a recent month was over $49,000.
Tavares’ actual quote in May was, “In the same way we brought you the €20,000 Euro Citroën e-C3, you will have a $25,000 Jeep very soon.” The Europe-only Jeep Avenger, a small crossover, starts at €35,000.
Stellantis doubled down on this idea in today’s Investor Day presentations, adding the Renegade name. The pictured car is from the gasoline version recently sold in the United States; the new car will have nothing in common with it but the name and possibly the styling.
Tesla previously announced a future car in that price range, but has a long history of not delivering on its price promises; after promising a $35,000 Series X to win comparisons to the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla chose to not actually make any for that price.
