Did electric cars (EVs) gain or lose market share in Europe in January? It depends what you compare them to.
Compared with the final quarter of European sales in 2023, EVs definitely lost ground. But compared with January 2024, they garnered a higher share. 11% of the passenger vehicles registered in the EU during January 2024 were BEVs; 8% were PHEVs, which can run entirely on batteries for a while but also have an engine. Diesels were 13%, ordinary hybrids were 29%, and gasoline-only were 35%. The remaining 4% were likely mostly hydrogen; Stellantis has a hefty share of both BEV and hydrogen vehicles in Europe.
Stellantis gained some market share over January 2024, rising from 18.6% to 19.1% of the market; Volkswagen fell a bit from 26.1% to 25.9%. Renault was Europe’s #3 but fell from 11.7% to 10.1%. Toyota, Hyundai, and BMW were the next three, all with single-digit shares (8.8% and below).
Jeep gained in share with the Avenger garnering sales; it rose from 1.2% to 1.3% share, which is still quite good by Jeep standards. Ram and Dodge were in Stellantis’ “others” category, along with Maserati, with a collective 0.1% share.
