The Hurricane Six has been honored by Ward’s in their Ten Best Engines list, a global award, for the second year in a row. This is the eighth consecutive year FCA or Chrysler power has made the list.
Ward’s specified the engine as used in the 2025 Ram 1500, where it is rated at 540 hp and 521 lb-ft of torque, far above the outgoing 5.7 liter Hemi V8 and also beating the SRT version of the 6.4 liter Hemi V8. It is matched to an eight-speed automatic. Despite the extra power, the six-cylinder has a higher rated fuel economy number than the Hemi V8, according to Wards, which praised the engine’s “assured rumble.”
To assure durability with its high power, the engineers used a deep skirt block design with a structural oil pan, cross-bolted steel main bearing caps, a forged steel crankshaft and forge steel connecting rods; the block is deck-plate honed during manufacturing. Plasma transfer wire arc coatings in the bores replaced the old inserts to make the engine more compact. The Hurricane’s twin turbochargers use a water-to-air charge cooler with a dedicated cooling circuit. Direct fuel injection is delivered under high pressure of up to 5,075 psi or 350 bar. All the Hurricanes are currently made in Mexico.
