In its quest to protect itself from the threat of low-cost Chinese cars, Stellantis has announced that it will import GAC’s Empow as the new Dodge Attitude in Mexico.
$1 (USD) is currently equivalent to $19.18 in Mexico pesos. The Challenger would start at $53,000.
The car has a slightly longer wheelbase than the old Dodge Dart (and just about the same as the old Valiant and Duster), at 108 inches; it appears to be around 186 inches long to the Dart’s 184. It is also nearly an inch wider than the Dart, which was already a wide car. It is, however, considerably lighter than the Dart, which started at 3,186 lb; the Empow weighs 2,965 to 3,307 lb, with the hybrid adding around 340 lb.
The Empow is on GAC’s new global modular platform system, and will replace the Mitsubishi Mirage. It has three possible engines, a seven-speed automated manual; an eight-speed traditional automatic; and a CVT. Its three engines are a 1.5 turbo (168-174 hp), a 2.0 turbo (261 hp), and a 2.0 hybrid (235 hp).
Peugeot and Fiat both make cars in a similar price class, but the company appears to prefer bringing in cars from their former joint venture partner in China.
