After filing a lawsuit last week against the UAW and UAW Local 230 representing the Los Angeles Parts Distribution Center on Oct. 3, Stellantis filed eight additional lawsuits against the UAW and 23 Local unions on October 4. The UAW met with Stellantis afterwards to ask about bringing back the Job Bank, which keeps laid-off employees on payroll, but not at work, for Belvidere workers given that the plans for new product have been delayed (according to Stellantis) or possibly cancelled (according to the UAW). Stellantis rejected the idea.
Belvidere employees are on temporary layoff, which provides 74% of pay and full healthcare benefits. Stellantis continues to say that plans for Belvidere have been delayed, not cancelled.
Stellantis also claims that a strike by the UAW would be illegal based on its Investment Letter 311. The union believes Stellantis’ agreement to produce new product at specific plants remains valid, as does the union’s contractual right to strike. Stellantis’ lawsuit threat could bankrupt the UAW if judges side with the company, regardless of the NLRB’s rulings.
Stellantis North America had the largest profits of any Stellantis region in the last quarter and the quarter before that. However, Stellantis is relentlessly driving to cut costs, conducting mass layoffs amidst product development and then seeming to be puzzled as to why there are delays.
