The Hurricane six-cylinder engine is just 3.0 liters in displacement but outpowers the still-competitive 5.7 Hemi V8 used in 2023 Ram 1500 pickups. Some were disappointed in the 2025 Ram 1500’s official gas mileage figures, but a bit of research shows that the gain is really quite substantial—and hidden somewhat by the nonlinear nature of gas mileage.
This figure, provided by brother site Motales, shows that the lower the starting mileage, the higher the impact of a small increase in mpg. Applied to the Ram 1500, we can see that going from 15 city to 18 city can save a 12,000-mile-per-year driver a stunning 133 gallons. If that driver stayed on the highway, it would be 78 gallons, which is still impressive. To see just how important that gain is, realize that Ram sells hundreds of thousands of pickups per year, and they can typically be expected to stay on the road for 200,000 miles.
If the Dodge Dart Aero, on the other hand, gained 3 mpg, it would be 20 or 36 gallons of fuel saved per car—with fewer cars on the road. Yet it’s still adding 3 mpg. The perception gap could be avoided by moving to gallons per 100 miles, as metric folk use liters per 100 km, but that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.
