The last UAW move spared Ford from having its parts plants go on strike; but the Ford Chicago plant is going on strike today. That puts the Explorer and Aviator out of action. GM is being hit in Lansing with the Traverse-Enclave plant on strike.
The union’s president, Sean Fain, said that Stellantis had made “significant progress” on a number of topics, including a moratorium on outsourcing, just before the Friday strike announcements. Ford’s stop to work on a battery plant in Michigan apparently spurred the strike of its Chicago plant, as it was seen as a threat of job cuts.
Around 17% of the UAW’s members are currently on strike. Talks with all three companies are proceeding at the same time.
