Jeep bests Land Rover in off-roading slot in WhatCar? awards

Jeep bested Land Rover/Range Rover in the UK’s top car magazine, WhatCar?, in its only off-road class: Family SUV for Off-Roading. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon won the contest, with its turbocharged four-cylinder producing 272 hp and eight-speed automatic. The editor, Steve Huntingford, wrote that this “shows that off-roading is still at Jeep’s core.”

The new Fiat 500 42kWh won “Best small electric car for the city.”

The most reliable prize went to Lexus, with Toyota coming in closely behind—and then Mini, which has dramatically improved its result partly due to the strong reliability of the Mini Electric.

The top Family SUV of the Year was, surprisingly, the Kia Sportage with a 1.6 liter turbo engine (148 hp, 41.5 mpg). Land Rover did win the 7-Seater of the Year award with the Defender 110. Small SUV went to the Lexus LBX, a hybrid. The magazine has numerous award categories, and generally doesn’t seem to favor the home brands.
