GM, Ford, Toyota gain in Q2; Stellantis not yet in

The top three automakers in America have reported their sales, and all three had a good second quarter.

Toyota, possibly the world’s largest automaker, gained by 7% for the second quarter over 2024, with 666,469 U.S. sales in April, May, and June. The Corolla, Camry, RAV4, and Tacoma have already passed six figures, selling, respectively, 120,052; 155,330; 239,451; and 130,873 so far (in the first half of the year).

GM PowerBank

General Motors, former world’s largest automaker, also posted 7% sales growth for the quarter, taking the #1 spot in both total and retail sales for the first half of the year. Buick, which now sells only crossovers, had a 29% gain in the first half. Chevrolet EV sales more than doubled in the second quarter, over the same period in 2024. The company sold 746,588 cars in the first half of the year, beating Toyota by a good margin. GM expects to see a 17.4% market share for the quarter when all sales are reported. Their retail sales were up by 10% and were their beset since 2016. EV sales were 46,280 in the quarter, 78,167 in the half. In both cases, they were double their 2024 numbers, giving GM an estimated EV market share in Q2 of 16%.

Ford claimed to have blown the doors off the industry, with a 14% increase for Q2 and total sales of 612,095, largely on the strength of its pickups (which were a bit less than half its total sales, with 222,459 F-series sold in the quarter, as well as Rangers and Mavericks). The company sold many hybrids, but relatively few electrics.

New Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai reported a gain of 10% overall for both Q2 and the first half of the year. Sales for Hyundai, not including partner Kia, were 235,726 in the quarter. Retail sales rose by 5% for the first half though total sales rose by 10%, suggesting stronger fleet numbers. Year to date, its Ioniqs have had similar sales to the prior year, at 25,414 vs 25,640 for the 5 and 6 for 2025 and 2024; but the 9 was just added in May, accounting for 1,013 sales so far this year. The best selling Hyundai so far is the Tucson (with 113,310 so far this year), then the Elantra and the Santa Fe.

Kia set a record with 416,511 sales in the first half, an 8% gain. They did not report second quarter sales separately. their best seller so far in the year is the K4 (Forte), followed by the Telluride; the Carnival only managed 33,152 sales so far in the year and seems unlikely to challenge the Pacifica. The EV6 and EV9 totaled just 10,813 so far this year.

Neither GM nor Ford seem to have supplied a sales table yet.

Stellantis normally introduces its sales figures early when the numbers are good, later when they are not. This quarter was no exception, and Stellantis provided U.S. sales in the evening.
