Last week, the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S was launched as the offroad-oriented brand’s first all-electric vehicle. Based on social media comments, many people don’t realize that the Wagoneer S isn’t really related to the existing Wagoneer (aside from the name) and that the two vehicles are vastly different sizes. Some people could not believe that the Wagoneer “has been switched to electric so soon”, but the Wagoneer S is not a replacement for the gasoline-powered Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer; it is not a new generation or anything of that nature. In fact, not only is the battery-electric Wagoneer S smaller than the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer, but it is also smaller than the two-row Grand Cherokee—which is why Jeep compared it to the Tesla Model Y in their first teaser video.
With all of the confusion and uncertainty with regard to the new Jeep Wagoneer S, it seems a good time to comapre the interior and exterior dimensions of the new BEV with the Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee, previous-generation Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, and the Tesla crossover.
Wagoneer S Versus Other Large Jeeps
The new Jeep Wagoneer S BEV has an overall length of 192.4 inches (all numbers here are in inches, so I wont be specifying inches with every number throughout the piece), a wheelbase of 113, a track of 64.4/64.5 (front/rear), an overall height of 64.8, an overall width with mirrors of 83.6, and a curb weight of 5,667 pounds.
By comparison, the Jeep Wagoneer (below in red)—the big one with the gasoline engine—has a length of 214.7, a wheelbase of 123, a track width of 68.4/68.3, an overall height of 79.7, an overall width with mirrors of 94 and a curb weight of 6,431 pounds.
In other words, the gas-powered Jeep Wagoneer is more than a foot longer overall, nearly a foot longer in wheelbase, more than a foot taller, almost a foot wider, and almost 800 pounds heavier than the new BEV Wagoneer S. They also have vastly different exterior designs and completely different chassis layouts, so the two really aren’t related in any way beyond the name. In short, the new Jeep Wagoneer S is not an electric version of the Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer.
Dimension | Wagoneer S | Wagoneer |
---|---|---|
Length | 192.4 | 214.7 |
Wheelbase | 113 | 123 |
Height | 64.8 | 79.7 |
Width | 83.6 | 94 |
Weight | 5,667 | 6,431 |
The specifications for the new Jeep Wagoneer S seem somewhat similar to the Grand Cherokee (below in red), but it is smaller than that, as well. The current Grand Cherokee has an overall length of 193.5 inches with a wheelbase of 116.7, with a track width of 65.4 (front and rear), an overall height of 70.8, an overall width of 84.6 and a curb weight of 4784. The Grand Cherokee isn’t dramatically bigger than the Wagoneer S, but it is bigger.
Dimension | Wagoneer S | Wagoneer | Grand Cherokee |
---|---|---|---|
Length | 192.4 | 214.7 | 193.5 |
Wheelbase | 113 | 123 | 116.7 |
Height | 64.8 | 79.7 | 70.8 |
Width | 83.6 | 94 | 84.6 |
Weight | 5,667 | 6,431 | 4,784 |
Finally, since Jeep compared the acceleration to the old Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, we pulled the specifications for the Hellcat Hemi-powered SUV as well. The Trackhawk is slightly shorter overall at 189.8, but it has a longer wheelbase than the Wagoneer S at 114.7. The two share a relatively similar track width, but the Trackhawk is slightly wider at 84.8 and slightly taller at 67.9. The previous generation Grand Cherokee, in short, was slightly larger than the Wagoneer S; but it weighed around 300 pounds less.
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is built on the STLA Large chassis platform, but it is smaller than all of the current full-sized SUVs from Jeep and it is smaller than the previous generation Grand Cherokee as well.
Wagoneer S Versus Tesla Model Y
In the first teaser video of the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S, Jeep compared it to the Tesla Model Y. The Model Y is the best-selling battery-electric vehicle in the world; if Jeep wants to have the best-selling BEV SUV, they need to beat the Model Y, so the comparison makes good sense.
The Tesla Model Y has an overall length of 187 with a wheelbase of 113.8, so it is shorter than the Wagoneer S overall, but the Tesla has a slightly longer wheelbase. The Model Y measures 83.8 wide and 64 high, so it is 2 tenths of an inch wider and 8 tenths of an inch shorter than the Wagoneer S, while the two share an identical track width. Most importantly, the Model Y weighs just 4,398 pounds – nearly 1,300 pounds less than the Wagoneer S. That curb weight difference is why the Jeep has gobs more power, but is only a tenth of a second quicker from 0-60.
Dimension | Wagoneer S | Telsa Model Y |
---|---|---|
Length | 192.4 | 187 |
Wheelbase | 113 | 113.8 |
Height | 64.8 | 64 |
Width | 83.6 | 83.8 |
Weight | 5,667 | 4,398 |
0-60 mph | 3.4 | 3.5 |
After seeing that the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S and Tesla Model Y were so close in exterior measurements, I took a closer look at interior space. Although the Tesla is shorter, it offers three more inches of headroom up front and two extra inches for the rear seats than the Jeep. The Tesla also has an advantage in legroom, with a half inch for the front seats, but 2.5 inches for passengers in the back seats. However, although the Jeep is narrower than the Model Y, the Wagoneer S offers an inch more shoulder and hip room in the front seats, while the rear seats of the Jeep offer 3.5 inches of extra shoulder space and 3.8 inches of extra hip space.
In short, tall, thin drivers and passengers will have more space in the Tesla Model Y while drivers and passengers with wider shoulders and hips will find the Wagoneer S more comfortable – especially in the back seats.
