Recalls: backup cameras and truck stalling

Two Mopar recalls surfaced today, one which is quite serious but affects few cars, and one which is less serious but—also affects relatively few cars.

The more serious issue is an engine computer with a misaligned capacitor; this can short circuit, killing the engine. Globally, it affects roughly 5,000 2022 model-year Rams built with the Cummins diesel. The fix is replacing the computer, free to the customer; all suspect vehicles were:

  • Ram 2500, built from June 1, 2022 to August 24, 2022 (2,288 sold in the US)
  • Ram 3500 pickup, built from March 16, 2022 to July 23, 2022 (1,417 sold in the US)
  • Ram 3500 chassis cab, built from June 1, 2022 to July 2, 2022 (385 sold in the US)
  • Ram 4500/5500, built from May 31, 2022 to August 23, 2022 (817 sold in the US)

The second recall concerns around 8,000 2020-21 diesel-powered Jeeps and Rams with certain radios; a software error prevents the rearview camera from working, and the recall, not surprisingly, updates the radio, which fixes an issue with the radio’s rebooting. This only affects EcoDiesel-equipped vehicles; the specific models are:

  • 2020-21 Jeep Wrangler, made from August 30, 2019 to November 20, 2020 (2,737 sold in the US)
  • 2020-21 Ram 1500, made from June 3, 2019 to November 20, 2020 (4,976 sold in the US)
  • 2021 Jeep Gladiator, made from June 10, 2020 to November 20, 2020 (182 sold in the US)

For perspective, Mopar recalls were announced at roughly the same time as these:

  • Hyundai: 2022 Elantra N, 2022-23 Elantra may have a bad weld on the cover of the driver’s airbag
  • 2017-20 Ford “Super Duty” trucks and Lincoln Continental rear view camera quality degrades to the point where it’s useless
  • 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E rear axle half shafts may be defective, breaking under load
  • 2022 Audi S3, A3, RS3 front passenger airbags may have been made incorrectly
  • 2015-17 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator front blower motor failure
  • 2023 Kia Sportage battery terminals may loosen, causing a stall or electrical surge
  • 2013-15 Spark, 2014-15 Spark EV: secondary hood latch may corrode, causing failur
